The only way over is the National Trust ferry from Orford Quay. Runs Tuesday–Saturday in season (roughly April to October); book online.

Allow 3–4 hours on the Ness, it's bigger than it looks and there's no café.

Take water, sturdy shoes, and binoculars. The Cold War military ruins are as memorable as the wildlife.

Dogs aren't allowed on the Ness, leave them at the cottage for the day.

May and June, the Ness ferry is running, the pubs have space, and the marshes are alive with birds.

September, warm, quiet, and oyster season is in full swing.

October to March, the ferry stops, but the village is at its most atmospheric. Log fires, storm walks, empty castle.
