Dog running on a Suffolk beach at low tide

Dog-Friendly Holiday Cottages in Suffolk

Suffolk is one of the best counties in England for a holiday with a dog. Dog-friendly beaches you can walk for miles, pubs that hand out sausages at the bar, and cottages where dogs sleep on the sofa without anyone tutting.

Most of our cottages welcome up to 2 dogs (a few take 3 or more — ask). We don't charge extortionate dog fees and we don't pretend dogs aren't going to be dogs.

Beds, bowls, towels for muddy paws and a list of the best local walks are left in every dog-friendly cottage. Some have dog-wash showers in the boot room.

Best dog-friendly beaches in Suffolk

Walberswick — dogs off-lead year-round, miles of sand at low tide, the river crossing to Southwold is an adventure of its own.

Dunwich — wide pebble-and-sand beach, dogs welcome all year, and the Flora Tea Rooms at the top of the beach is famously dog-friendly.

Covehithe — wild, eroding cliffs, almost nobody there. Dogs love it.

Sizewell — long flat sand, dogs all year on most of the beach (avoid the section right by the power station fence).

Southwold and Aldeburgh main beaches restrict dogs May to September on the central section, but the ends are dog-friendly all year.

Dog-friendly pubs we'd actually send you to

The Anchor at Walberswick — dogs everywhere, decent food, garden runs to the marsh.

The Ship at Dunwich — log fire, sandy floor, dog water bowls outside.

The Bell at Middleton — proper village pub, dogs by the fire.

The Queen's Head, Bramfield — Michelin-recommended food, still happy for your dog to be in the bar.

The Eel's Foot at Eastbridge — RSPB Minsmere on the doorstep, regular folk nights, dogs in the bar.

Walks worth driving for

RSPB Minsmere — circular walks across heath, woodland and reedbed. Dogs on leads in places. Allow half a day.

Dunwich Heath — purple in August, woodland trails, café at the top, sea views the whole way down.

Southwold to Walberswick loop via the ferry — 4 miles, one of the most beautiful coastal walks in England.

Knettishall Heath — Brecks heathland, miles of off-lead walking, almost always quiet.

Frequently asked

Questions guests ask us

How many dogs are allowed per cottage?

Most welcome up to 2 dogs. A few take 3 or more — use the dog filter or just ask us before you book.

Is there a dog charge?

Yes, usually £20–£40 per dog per stay (not per night). It covers the extra cleaning. We never charge if the dog is a registered assistance dog.

Are there breed or size restrictions?

No — we judge on behaviour not breed. Bigger dogs are very welcome.

Are dogs allowed on the sofas and beds?

On the sofas, yes (a throw is provided). On the beds — owner's choice, please respect it. Most cottages would rather not.

What's provided for the dog?

Bed, two bowls, an old towel for muddy paws, poo bags, and a printed guide to the best local walks. Some cottages have a dog-wash shower in the boot room.

Are dogs allowed on Suffolk beaches all year?

Walberswick, Dunwich, Covehithe and most of Sizewell — yes, year-round, off-lead. Southwold and Aldeburgh main beaches restrict dogs from May to September on the central section, but the ends remain dog-friendly all year.
