Suffolk weekend break — coastal cottage at dawn

Friday to Monday

Weekend Breaks in Suffolk

Suffolk is the best weekend-break county in England — two hours from London, big enough to feel like a proper trip, small enough that you're not driving all weekend. We specialise in the kind of weekend that resets you.

Most of our cottages take 2 or 3-night weekend stays from Friday off-peak, and a full week in school holidays. Sunday-night arrivals are often a sweet spot if you want a quiet 3-day midweek.

Saxmundham and Halesworth are on the East Suffolk Line from London Liverpool Street, so a no-car weekend works for several of our cottages.

The ideal Suffolk weekend, in three days

Friday evening: arrive, fish & chips on Aldeburgh seafront from The Golden Galleon, walk on the shingle, woodburner on, early night.

Saturday: morning swim or beach walk, brunch at Two Magpies in Southwold, afternoon at RSPB Minsmere or Dunwich Heath, dinner at The Crown in Southwold or The Lighthouse in Aldeburgh.

Sunday: long lunch at The Bell at Middleton or The Queen's Head at Bramfield, slow drive home via Pump Street Bakery in Orford for the road.

Best weekend bases

Aldeburgh — for food and music. Quiet enough to walk to dinner.

Walberswick — for switching off properly. Two pubs, miles of beach, no traffic.

Southwold — for the all-in-one weekend: walking, swimming, pub, brewery, pier, shops.

Framlingham — for couples who want countryside and a great food scene without the coastal crowds.

Tips for booking the right Suffolk weekend

Book May, June or September if you want warm weather without the August crowds. October is brilliant for woodburner weekends.

Avoid August bank holiday unless you've booked 9 months out. Half-terms book fast too.

For a no-car weekend, look at cottages walkable from Saxmundham, Halesworth or Darsham stations — ask us which.

Pack layers. The wind comes off the sea even on warm days.

Frequently asked

Questions guests ask us

What's the shortest stay you allow?

Two nights midweek off-peak, three nights at weekends. Two-night Friday-Saturday is sometimes possible last-minute in winter — ask.

Is two hours from London realistic?

By car, yes — Liverpool Street to Aldeburgh is around 2h 15m via the A12 outside rush hour. By train, Saxmundham is 2h direct from Liverpool Street.

Can I do a Suffolk weekend without a car?

Yes for a handful of cottages walkable from Saxmundham, Halesworth or Darsham stations. Taxis from those stations to Aldeburgh, Southwold or Walberswick are around £25–£35. Ask us which cottages suit.

Best time of year for a weekend in Suffolk?

May, June and September for weather and quiet. October to March for woodburner weekends — Dunwich and Walberswick are at their most romantic in winter.

Are dogs welcome on a weekend break?

Yes — most of our cottages take up to 2 dogs. Filter dog-friendly when you browse.

Can I book a Sunday-to-Tuesday or Sunday-to-Wednesday?

Often yes off-peak. We can be flexible on arrival day for 3+ night stays outside school holidays.
