Family on a sandy Suffolk beach in summer

Family Holidays in Suffolk

Suffolk is the family-holiday county a lot of parents quietly prefer to Cornwall — same beaches and pasties energy, half the drive, twice the space. We work with the kind of homes parents actually want: garden, dishwasher, room for travel cots, beach a short walk away.

Every family-friendly cottage in our collection lists what you actually need to know: travel cot, highchair, stair gate, garden enclosure, dishwasher, walk-to-beach time.

Welcome packs include the kids: a bag of treats, a printed activity sheet, sometimes a colouring book. Small things that buy you the first afternoon to unpack.

Best Suffolk towns for a family holiday

Southwold — the all-in-one. Beach huts, pier with arcade, lighthouse climb, Adnams brewery (kids welcome on tours), short walk everywhere.

Thorpeness — boating lake the kids can paddle on, House in the Clouds, golf course with mini-golf, sandy beach next door.

Walberswick — proper sand at low tide, crabbing from the harbour wall, two pubs that don't mind sandy children.

Aldeburgh — the most refined option. Fish and chips on the shingle, sea-front putting green, easy parking outside school holidays.

Family days out — the ones worth your time

Pleasurewood Hills, near Lowestoft — proper theme park, good for primary-age kids and up.

Africa Alive! at Kessingland — zoo with giraffes, rhinos, free-roaming meerkats. Half a day.

RSPB Minsmere — full-day if you go in. Hides, trails, a great visitor centre and café.

Snape Maltings — Saturday craft markets, river walks, ice cream, sculpture trail.

Sutton Hoo (NT) — the Anglo-Saxon ship burial. Worth it for older kids.

Frequently asked

Questions guests ask us

Do you provide travel cots, highchairs and stair gates?

Yes — free, on request when booking. Just tell us how old the kids are and we'll set everything up before you arrive.

Best Suffolk beach for kids?

Walberswick at low tide for sand. Southwold for the pier and beach-hut feel. Sizewell south end for a calm, shallow swim.

Are there family-friendly pubs?

Most Suffolk village pubs welcome kids before 8pm. The Anchor at Walberswick, The Ship at Dunwich and The Lord Nelson in Southwold are particularly good with families.

How busy is Suffolk in school holidays?

Southwold and Aldeburgh are busy in late July and August. Walberswick, Dunwich and Thorpeness stay relatively quiet even in peak. Book by January for summer holidays.

Can grandparents come too?

Yes — several of our larger family cottages have ground-floor bedrooms and bathrooms specifically for multi-generational stays. Filter by 'sleeps 8+' or just ask.

Is Suffolk easy to get to with kids?

Two hours from London by car or train. The train (Liverpool Street to Saxmundham) is often easier with under-5s than the M25.
