Where to Eat in Southwold: Our Favourite Local Spots

Where the locals actually eat in Southwold: the best fish and chips, the bakery worth queueing for, the harbour lunch spot, and the sit-down dinner that never disappoints.

Where to eat in Southwold, by people who eat here

Southwold punches well above its size on the food front. As locals, here's our honest guide to where to eat, covering the proper sit-down dinners, the can't-leave-without lunches, the bakery you'll go back to every morning, and the fish-and-chips queue that's worth joining.

For a proper sit-down dinner

Sutherland House is the most consistently excellent restaurant in town, beautifully cooked seasonal British food in a 16th-century building, with impeccable service. Book ahead.

The Crown is the dependable, smart-but-not-stiff choice, modern British, and you can actually hear yourself talk.

Sole Bay Fish Company at the harbour is a different kind of dinner, fresh seafood platters, oysters, lobster, eaten right by the boats. Casual, brilliant, and the best place in town when the weather plays.

For a great lunch

The Lord Nelson is the Southwold favourite. The best fish pie in town, a courtyard that catches the sun and a position one street back from the sea.

The Harbour Inn down at Blackshore is a proper old-fashioned waterside spot, fish and chips by the river, dogs welcome, sailors propping up the bar.

For fish and chips

There's a small civil war in Southwold about which is best. We are massive fans of Southwold Fish and Chips on the High street that reopened under new management in 2025.

For breakfast and bakery

Two Magpies Bakery, the best bakery in Suffolk and one of the best in England. Sourdough that ruins all other sourdough, cardamom buns, brilliant coffee, and a proper sit-down brunch menu. Expect to queue at weekends; it's worth it.

The Black Olive Delicatessen is your secondary pastry stop and the place to assemble a proper picnic for the beach.

For coffee and a quiet hour

The Lighthouse Coffee Shop does excellent coffee and a small but excellent cake selection in a calm, locals-heavy room. The Two Magpies coffee is also faultless if you can wedge in.

For an ice cream

You're in a proper seaside town, get an ice cream. Sundaes Gelato on the High Street is the classic, with a long counter of properly made flavours. Eat it walking up to Gun Hill.

For something different

The Swan on the Market Place does a more contemporary, design-led dining experience, beautiful room and very good food.

If you've got a car, drive 15 minutes to The Westleton Crown for one of the best gastropub dinners on the entire Suffolk Coast, or down the road to The Anchor at Walberswick for an unbeatable Sunday lunch.

A mini food itinerary

A perfect Southwold food day, the way we'd do it:

  • Breakfast: Two Magpies (cardamom bun and a flat white)
  • Mid-morning: a wander up the High Street, coffee at The Lighthouse
  • Lunch: The Lord Nelson (fish pie, sunny courtyard)
  • Afternoon snack: Sundaes Gelato or chips from Mrs T's on the prom
  • Dinner: Sutherland House or harbourside at Sole Bay Fish Co
  • Nightcap: The Crown
