Maggi Hambling's Scallop sculpture on the shingle beach at Aldeburgh

Shingle, Scallop & Snape

Aldeburgh Coastal Cottages

Aldeburgh is Southwold's more understated neighbour. A long shingle beach, fishermen selling that morning's catch from huts on the front, a high street of proper independent shops, and Snape Maltings ten minutes inland.

Coastal cottages here range from fishermen's cottages in the lanes behind the High Street to larger houses along Crag Path with the sea directly in front of them. Ours are managed locally and turned over by our own team.

Book direct and there is no platform service fee, plus a Suffolk phone number that someone actually answers.

Why Aldeburgh over anywhere else on this coast

Food and music, largely. The fish shacks on the beach sell what came in that morning, the chip shop queue is a local institution, and Snape Maltings puts world-class concerts in a converted malt house surrounded by reed beds.

It is also the best base on the coast for walking. North along the beach to Thorpeness and the House in the Clouds, south past the Scallop and Orford Ness, or inland along the Alde toward Snape.

Choosing a cottage

Crag Path is the seafront and the view is unbeatable, though the shingle bank means you hear the sea constantly, which most people love and a few do not. The lanes behind the High Street are sheltered, quieter and closer to the shops.

Parking again matters, particularly in festival weeks in June when Aldeburgh is at its fullest. If you are coming for concerts at Snape, factor in a ten minute drive each way or the shuttle service in season.

Best times to visit

June for the Aldeburgh Festival, September for warm sea and empty beaches, and the winter months for a wind-blown, wood-burner sort of weekend. August is lovely and busy in equal measure.

Frequently asked

Questions guests ask us

Can you swim at Aldeburgh?

Yes, though the shingle shelves steeply and the water gets deep quickly. It is best in July to September and worth taking care with children and strong currents.

How far is Snape Maltings from Aldeburgh?

Around ten minutes by car, or a longer and very pretty walk along the river Alde.

Are Aldeburgh cottages dog friendly?

Many are, and the beach is dog friendly year-round with some seasonal restrictions on the central stretch. Filter for pets when checking availability.

Is Aldeburgh good in winter?

Very. The town stays open, the beach is empty, and the pubs and restaurants are much easier to get into.
